In short…
Here are some ideas for things to do in Sète with children when it rains, so you can enjoy your holiday, but stay dry!
Take the time to taste the local products of Sète at its restaurants and in the Les Halles de Sète, the indoor market, which is a true paradise for food lovers. Discover the charming Quartier Haut, with its artists and workshops, as well as several museums such as the Paul Valéry Museum and the Sea Museum, which highlight the region’s maritime history and culture. For a breathtaking view of the town and the Mediterranean Sea, go up Mont Saint-Clair, accessible by car or bus, and visit the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette chapel, rich in frescoes. Sète also has a multitude of art galleries and museums, promising an unforgettable cultural and gastronomic experience.
Savour local cuisine at Sète’s indoor market
Les Halles de Sète, the indoor market located in the town centre, is a temple of local gastronomy where you can discover Mediterranean specialties and local products. Over 75 vendors offer fresh products, including fish, vegetables, fruits, as well as Italian specialties like la tielle and la Giulietta (a must-try!), and shellfish from the Thau Lagoon.
Les Halles de Sète is also a lively meeting place, especially for an aperitif, even in winter. Here, you’ll find two restaurants: Halles et Manger, offering Mediterranean cuisine with fresh fish, seasonal products and local specialties, and Le Marcel, led by Michelin-starred chef Denis Martin, focusing on seasonal market cuisine from local producers.
Les Halles de Sète is open every day, including Sundays, from 7 am to 3 pm.
Enjoy lunch or dinner in one of Sète’s restaurants
Sète has many restaurants, ranging from popular local spots to refined dining options. We’ve put together a list of our favourites to help you choose.
You can read our article, but in summary: L’Oranger is known for its Mediterranean cuisine and warm welcome, while Chez François is famous for its excellent seafood platters. For fresh and local dishes, La Table de Laura is a real gem and our favourite restaurant in Sète. Le Boucanier offers a casual atmosphere with delicious seafood tapas. For oysters, L’Annexe is an excellent choice, as is Les Halles de Sète indoor market. La Poulperie serves dishes based on octopus, and Leelou Bistrot offers homemade French meals with vegetarian options and brunch. In summer, several restaurants open right on the beach, like La Ola. There’s something to satisfy every palate and every budget.
Visit the Quartier Haut, but stay dry!
The Quartier Haut, Sète’s, high district, is the oldest neighbourhood in Sète, built by fishermen from Naples at the end of the 19th century. Today, it has become a haven for artists, with many small workshops scattered around, some open all year round and others during special “Artist Days.” Expressive, joyful, and charming, it retains the authenticity of Sète. Here, you’ll find our 19th-century fisherman’s house, Le Pouffre.
On rainy days, you may not want to wander too much in the streets, but you can visit the Saint-Louis Decanal Church and the Quartier Haut chapel, as well as the Paul Valéry Museum and the Sea Museum.
Saint-Louis Decanal Church in the Quartier Haut of Sète
Saint-Louis Decanal
Rue des 3 Journées
The Saint Louis Decanal Church (Eglise Saint-Louis Décanale) is the oldest and largest church in the town, also known as “La Décanale”. Built in stone in 1702 in honour of the town’s patron saint, this building was designed by architect Daviler, who worked with the famous Renaissance architect Mansart. The church was built on the site of a temporary wooden church, with the first stone laid in 1666. In 1989, Saint Louis Decanal Church was listed as a historic monument.
Each year, during the Fishermen’s Festival, the statue of Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, is transferred to the church for a large mass, followed by a procession to the sea in tribute to the sailors who have passed away.
